Sissy Spacek came to New York with little more than a dream. In her memoir My Extraordinary Ordinary Life, she details her life, as well as her illustrious film career that began with a non-credited role in Andy Warhol's 1970 film Trash.

Raised in a small East Texas town Spacek was encouraged by her family to follow her dreams.

In 1973 she received rave reviews for her role as the 15-year-old girlfriend of a mass-murderer, played by Martin Sheen, in Badlands.

An Academy Award for Best Actress followed in 1976 for her starring role in Carrie, the story of a teen outcast with telekinetic powers.

In 1980 she again won an Oscar for Best Actress for Coal Miner's Daughter, in which she played country music star Loretta Lynn, who selected her for the role.

In 2001, she received still another Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work in the award-winning film In the Bedroom.

Spacek's also appeared in numerous television shows and began her show business career as a singer. And most recently she appeared in the Oscar-nominated movie adaptation The Help as Mrs. Walters, the mother of of the terrible Hilly Holbrook in the story.
