William Shakespeare once said, "The course of true love never did run smooth." And in the romance novels featured below – all finalists for the 2010 Romance Writers of America Best Romance Novel Award – love must rise above a dizzying mix of obstacles.

  • The Better Part of Darkness, Kelly Gay: Returned from the dead, an unexplained revival that’s left her plagued by nightmares, cop and single mom Charlie Madigan must stop the distribution of an off-world drug called ash, while protecting her loved ones from a force more powerful than heaven and hell combined.
  • Scandal Sheet, Gemma Halliday: When she starts receiving death threats that lead to violence and murder, Tina Bender, the L.A. Informer's gossip columnist, is forced by her boss to hire bodyguard Calvin Dean, and they work together to stop the killer.
  • Red's Hot Honky Tonk Bar, Pamela Morsi: When forty-something bar owner Red, who has a penchant for tattoos and tight jeans, is suddenly responsible for two young grandchildren she hardly knows, she discovers that wisdom doesn’t necessarily come with age as she gets taught a few lessons in parenting, growing up and love.
  • The Lost Recipe for Happiness, Barbara O'Neal: Delighted to be offered her dream job of executive chef at an upscale Aspen restaurant, Elena Alvarez knows that this’ll be the opportunity of a lifetime, and through the delicious food she creates, the friendships she forms and the trust she learns to place in others, she finds the strength to confront the pain of her past and find healing in body and soul.
  • Silent on the Moor, Deanna Raybourn: Despite warnings to stay away, Lady Julia arrives at Grimsgrave in Yorkshire to find Brisbane as remote yet attractive as ever. A mystery soon unfolds from the rotten heart of the house--a mystery surrounding a Gypsy witch, a dark rider and a long-buried legacy of malevolence and evil.
  • The Accidental Bestseller, Wendy Wax: Once upon a time, four aspiring authors met at a writers' conference. Ten years later they're still friends, veterans of the dog-eat-dog New York publishing world.
  • The Virgin's Daughters: In the Court of Elizabeth I, Jeane Westin: In the midst of the repressed sexual longing, scandal and intrigue at the British Court, Queen Elizabeth I and her faithful servants, Lady Katherine Grey and Mistress Mary Rogers, must choose between duty and desire.
  • Lakeshore Christmas, Susan Wiggs: Prim librarian Maureen Davenport lives for Christmas – and there's nothing more magical than Christmas on Willow Lake. Finally getting her chance to direct Avalon's annual holiday pageant, she's determined to make it truly spectacular.
