Good Samaritan Opens Women’s Imaging Center

As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, the hospital opens center with advanced diagnostics to help women in Lindenhurst and elsewhere in Suffolk County.

’s recently opened will serve to bring 3D digital tomosynthesis – or – to the residents of Lindenhurst and elsewhere in Suffolk, since, according to hospital officials, it’s the only facility of its kind in the county.

Used in conjunction with other mammography technologies, this advanced imaging procedure detects abnormalities in dense breast tissue, helping to save lives, officials explained in a recent release about the center’s opening on September 22.

The ribbon cutting and opening ceremony – just ahead of the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – was attended by administration, physicians, elected officials and community members.

“Twenty years ago the tools available to diagnose and treat were minimal compared to the technology today. Thanks to the commitment of Good Samaritan Hospital, the center provides the latest in screening and full-field, digital mammography services,” Director of the Women’s Imaging Center Melinda J. Staiger, MD stated in the release .

Good Sam President and CEO James Caldas felt that the center and the offering of these advanced diagnostics is something the community was missing.

“Backed by the financial strength of Catholic Health Services and supported by The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation donors, we’re able to build a state-of-the-art Women’s Imaging Center,” he said, adding, ““Expansion of services starts with understanding the needs of the community, then engaging the best physician leadership and clinical staff.”

To that end, the center will feature an all-female staff that specializes in breast imaging. It’ll also be the home to the .

Good Sam’s all-female mammographers are specialists in breast imaging, officials noted. Additionally, Good Sam is accredited by the American College of Radiology, has three-year/full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and has earned three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer.
