Nation’s Capital Beckons Lindenhurst Native

A Lindenhurst High School graduate who’s excelling at George Mason University near the nation’s capital, is setting his sights on law school, and possibly a career in administrative law.

Philip Abbruscato is a native of the village of Lindenhurst on Long Island, N.Y.  In high school, he served as vice president of student council; vice president of class of 2011 class councils; secretary of the National Junior Honor Society; and drum major of the Lindenhurst High School Marching Band.

The nation’s capital soon beckoned. “As someone who wanted to pursue a degree in government  and politics, I felt that George Mason was the best place for me.  I wanted to be at a school that was close to Washington D.C. and had an impressive faculty and internship opportunities in the area that would allow me to excel in my academic field.”

Now, the junior is majoring in government and international politics, with a double minor in legal studies and in public policy and management, at Mason in Fairfax, Va. Abbruscato says he chose this field because of his interest in the U.S. legal system and political landscape.

At Mason, Abbruscato has served in the Student Senate for three years and recently was elected as Student Body President for the upcoming year.  “I’ve had the opportunity to build relationships and form connections with university administration and faculty in order to properly and effectively advocate for student interests,” he says. He also has volunteered and staffed some of Mason's largest events such as Gold Rush, Mason Day, Lobby Day and the Academic Advising Expo.

What’s ahead? “I would love to continue on to law school.  My time at this university has only helped reassure me that I am on the right career path,” says Abbruscato. “After spending the past two and a half years with this academic program I am confident that, upon completing it, I will be well equipped and prepared for attending law school and beyond.”
