Good Sam Offers Lindenhurst Residents Tips for a Healthy Holiday

Hospital says it's key to mix rich treats with heart-healthy foods this Thanksgiving and holiday season.

It's almost a given fact that people will overeat during holiday meals. With so many different kinds of food on the table, it's nearly impossible not to do so.

But Good Samaritan Hospital has rounded up a list of tips for residents of Lindenhurst and elsewhere to keep that waistlline down and avoiding potential strains put on your organs. 

Cathy Davis, clinical dietion at the hospital, provides the following suggestions Lindenhurst residents should consider on Thanksgiving:

  • Spend time playing games and doing other activities instead of snacking.
  • Avoid the temptation of making eating an all-day affair.
  • Eat slowly.
  • Prepare heart-healthy recipes, in addition to rich treats.

Good Sam also suggests that after big holiday meals, it's important to return to a healthy diet and abide by the USDA's new MyPlate, which emphasizes fruit, grain, protein and vegetables.

“Reorienting Americans toward ‘smart’ calories as opposed to ‘empty’ calories in their dietary choices will have a major impact in our battle against obesity and its long-term health hazards,” stated Good Samaritan’s Chief of Cardiology Larry Altschul, MD.
