Retired County Judge, Babylon Town Justice of the Peace Dies

John V. Vaughn passed away this week, only nine weeks after his beloved wife passed away on April 12.

Details of the retired Suffolk County judge’s life and passing include the following:

Vaughn passed away peacefully only nine weeks after losing his beloved wife and soul mate, the former Mary Kathleen Mulkeen, to cancer on April 12 this year.

Judge Vaughn - who his friends in the courthouse knew as "Riverhead Red," retired to Florida in 1997 - suffered a stroke in 2003.

He spent his remaining years in the loving care of his bride, his sister Ann Murphy, his six children and their spouses: Thomas J. and Helene Vaughn; Maureen and Michael Glass; Jean Skaalerud; Ann and Keith Huntington; Eileen and Patrick DiMarzo; and John V., Jr., and Kelly Vaughn; 16 grandchildren, his great granddaughter and beloved caregivers Juliet Jacobs and Diana King of Florida.

Prior to serving as Babylon Town's last official Justice of the Peace, Judge Vaughn also had the distinguished privilege of being elected as a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention during the administration of Governor Nelson Rockefeller.

From Justice of the Peace he went on to a lengthy service of multiple terms in the District Court and County Court of Suffolk County.

Services for Judge Vaughn were held at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home on Thursday, June 21, A funeral mass was held at on Friday, June 22.

He was buried at the Long Island National Cemetery with his wife Mary and his beloved daughter Patricia, who died of cancer in 1979.
