Walter Von Braunsberg, 79, Passes Away

Avid baseball fan and Korean War veteran passed away earlier this month.

Lindenhurst and Fort Myers, Florida resident Walter D. Von Braunsberg passed on July 5.

According to the Pocono Record, Braunsberg was 79 years old.

He was born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of the late Fred H. and Nora Von Braunsberg. He served as a medic for the United States Army in Korean War.

After returning from the war, he attended the State University of New York at Farmingdale and worked for the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, where he retired as an engineering assistant in 1984.

He was a big fan of the national pasttime – baseball – as both a player and a fan of the New York Mets. He was also involved in many local organizations, including coaching in Little League.

Braunsberg leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Theresa "Terry" (Mulroy), children Eileen McGovern of Fort Myers, FL; Johanna Von Braunsberg of Delaware Water Gap; and Thomas Von Braunsberg of Lutz, FL. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, many in-laws, cousins and his beloved dog, Daisy.

A mass to celebrate Braunsberg's life was celebrated in Fort Myers at Blessed Pope John XXIII Catholic Church on July 30.

In lieu of flowers, it was Braunsberg's request a memorial fund be established for the benefit of his grandchildren of his son Walter J. Von Braunsberg, who died earlier this year on April 21. All donations can be made out to Von's Childrens' Fund and mailed to Fifth Third Bank, 13350 Metro Parkway, Fort Myers, FL 33966.
