Do You Remember the Lindy Businesses That Have Come & Gone?

Turnover happens normally in a community, but what place do you miss the most in Lindenhurst?

Businesses have come and gone in Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst through the years – and the slumping economy hasn't helped make things easier.

Recent exits include in North Lindy, and among the most sentimental to many is the old movie theater and Friendly's in the Village.

So, Lindy, what do you think?

Which eatery or store from the past do you miss the most?

I miss the movie theater. As a child we could walk there (we lived on Madison Ave.) and for 50 cents we could buy a ticket for 25 cents and 4 bars of candy for 6 cents each and go home with a penny. I also remember Werner's Bowling alley. It only had 12 lanes but my Dad & Brother (both deceased) belonged to a Father/Son league that met on Sunday mornings.

Karl Ehmers was Otto Siben's clock factory, Jimmy Bono could not make good pizza,
Windish was originally Wilkens next to Moby drugs

WOW! I remember Kim's. We use to cut classes from school and go there to play the pinball machine and order the fries that came in a brown paper bag. Good old days they were.

Liebel's Hardware store! You could find anything there, pay your phone bill, post a package, get your lawn mower fixed...real old fashioned customer service, not like these everything in packages stores where you can't buy just one or two of the fasteners that you need.

Thought of another business that I miss like crazy. The shoemakers that was on North side of Hoffman Ave. where the new court building is now. Where oh where do you find a shoemaker today?

There's a shoemaker over on the corner of Albany Ave and I think 32st (?). By the Rainbow Center. It's the corner store and he's not always there but when he is, he does a great job. There's also one on Sunrise Hgwy in Massapeaqua--by the Petco. It's a tiny corner store on the inside corner by Petco (near Toys R Us). As soon as you go in it's like stepping back in time. Nice friendly guy who obviously knows his skill. He fixed a pair of shoes while I waited.

P&D Meats in North Lindenhurst. They made the best stuffed chicken breasts. Then one day it was gone. I know there were deaths in the family, but I wonder what happened?

I miss Udells, the Stationery Store, Friendlys ( like we need another 7/11 - really? I miss the carvel. I do remember the A & P - Moby Drugs - I don't miss the Shuffle Inn - nothing but trouble - I love the gazebo - a nice touch to the town. We are slowly getting back some restaurants - but my mother use to go to Fishbacks (next to where the gas station is) for all my clothes and my daughters clothes when she was young. I think she made him retire early. Always could use a good hardware store - I miss the local one in town, but I miss Sears now that it's gone too- why???? What are they going to put in these empty stores - all in that strip mall? We need a few clothes stores in town - that is what is missing. I wish Spoons stayed open later - and maybe got a bit bigger. It closes to early. You will never get enough foot traffic like Babylon or Huntington if you don't keep things open. The Lindy movie theatre - what a stupid thing we did - we could have used it for something alot better than a now defunct boat showroom.

Wow, I grew up in Lindenhurst, lived right behind the firehouse, neighbors to Otto, Ruth, Karen and Brian. Mr. Liebl was a kind gentleman and would sit me in his porch and talk to me like I as an adult( I was around 9 or 10 at the time) And Karen was my first crush. I moved away when I was 11 and never saw them again. I wonder how they are? Without a doubt my most memorable memories would be how I could hang out in the firehouse and on the 4th July, they would do the "Bughouse Parade". We would have squirt guns and we would shoot the firemen who would dress like hobos, man, what memories there were! Lindenhurst was the best place to live as a kid back then! Norwald Tukums

Hi my dad was a volunteer fireman in North Lindenhurst and I grew up there, he was also involved with the Bughouse Parades infact he was chief bug at one point. Those were great times. I married a Lindenhurst fireman and he will be celebrating 60 years of active service this yr. Eddie and Otto Liebl woud give our son nails everytime we would go in there to buy something it was a great place.
