Crash at N. Delaware & Sunrise Stops Traffic, Sends One to Good Sam

A four-vehicle crash involving a truck on Friday afternoon halts traffic and sends one woman to the hospital with a shoulder injury, according to police and fire officials.

Traffic came to a halt on Friday afternoon on Sunrise Highway at North Delaware Avenue in Lindenhurst when a car collided with a carting truck, causing it to strike two other cars.

According to Suffolk Police the crash happened at 1:54 p.m. when a 75-year-old woman driving a Honda Accord stopped short at a light and collided with a carting truck.

The truck pushed her vehicle into oncoming traffic, police said.

"The car cut in front of the truck," said Mike Newman, deputy chief of the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, which responded to the scene. NLFD Chief Brian Gassen was in charge of the call, he noted.

The large, green dump truck and the car ended up in front of the Long Island Paneling, Ceiling and Floors store, with the front wheels of truck on top of the hood and the driver's side of the Accord, crushing them.

But despite the car being totaled, police said the woman wasn't injured.

"The truck was on top of the car, but the lady got out of the car okay, and didn't have to be taken to the hospital," Newman told Lindenhurst Patch.

The male driver of the truck was fine, as well.

"It looked a lot worse than it was," he said.

There were two other vehicles were involved, a Mitsubishi Eclipse and an SUV, police said.

"They were at the light at Sunrise and Delaware waiting to make a left-hand turn," Newman said.

Each had a driver and a passenger, he said, and the female passenger in one of the vehicles had to be taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with what police said was a shoulder injury.

"She was shaken up, but the injuries were minor," the deputy chief said.

All lanes were shut down on Sunrise as police and fire officials worked to rescue those involved and clear the scene. Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles, according to one eyewitness report, and Westbound traffic stayed sluggish, as well.

Newman said once the cars and the SUV were cleared they had to wait for a heavy tow truck to remove the disabled carting truck involved in the accident.

Traffic both ways on Sunrise was back open by 4 p.m.
