'Knockout Game' Hits Babylon Town, N. Amityville Man Faces Charges in Attacks

Darryl Mitchell, 20, attacked at least seven men, two of them over the age of 65 over the past several months, officials say.

A North Amityville man will be arraigned on assault charges Wednesday stemming from "knockout-style" attacks in North Amityville and North Babylon, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Officials say Darryl Mitchell, 20, attacked at least seven men, two of them over the age of 65 over the past several months. Mitchell was arrested on Dec. 4 and has pleaded not guilty to four counts of third degree assault.

"The facts of the four assault charges share common denominators; the attack is unprovoked, it is sudden, the victim is punched in the head, usually the face, the assault occurs in broad daylight and the attacker immediately flees the scene," a statement from the DA's office reads.

In one case, a 69-year-old man was attacked by Mitchell on Williams Street in North Babylon, officials said.  One attack occurred on Williams Street in North Babylon on the afternoon Nov. 30.

“[The victim] was looking for his toolbox in his car trunk when he heard the suspect approach him from the rear,” District Attorney Thomas Spota said. “When [the victim] turned around, he was punched twice in the head.  He told us he spent a couple of weeks with horrendous headaches.”

On Dec. 1, Mitchell is accused on attacking two men on Jefferson Avenue in North Amityville, including a 66-year-old man who was walking when Mitchell ran up to him and punched him in the face, Spota said.

A half hour later, Mitchell attacked a man who was walking to church, Spota said. The victim told police that after he fell to the pavement, Mitchell kicked him in the head.

Mitchell will face additional charges when a grand jury indictment is unsealed Wednesday.

There have been numerous reports, often with disturbing video images, of so-called "knockout game" attacks across the country, including several currently being investigated in New York City.
