Before Hurricane Sandy, a Noreaster like the one currently bringing snow and high winds to Lindenhurst would've always been a concern for Lindenhurst Village officials.
But after being ravaged by the October superstorm, the flooding aspect of Friday's storm is of greater concern for Village officials, as many residents South of Montauk Highway are trying to rebuild and the Village is still dealing with associated cleanup.
Mayor Tom Brennan told Lindenhurst Patch that as of Friday afternoon the Village is experiencing normal levels of flooding.
"We're getting what we would normally get during this type of storm right now, and we're always concerned about that," he said.
"But it's the high tide tonight and tomorrow that we'll have to watch."
In the meantime, with the change-over from rain to snow begining around 3 p.m. Friday in Lindenhurst, crews stand ready at the Department of Public Works.
"It's already snowing on the East end of Long Island, and we should be getting that [soon]," the mayor said Friday afternoon.
According to Ray Fais, emergency manager for the Village, it's also "already snowing in Upton at the National Weather Service post, and that line is moving toward Lindenhurst. They're saying we'll get 12 to 20 inches, depending on the snow bans."
As such, "we're holding onto the day [DPW] crews now," the mayor said.
"They're ready to go, and we'll rotate the crews throughout the storm," Fais added.
Mayor Brennan said the Lindenhurst Fire Department is on alert now, and is all set and ready for the storm, as well.
If residents have an emergency during the storm, then they should call 911.
If residents have snow-related issues, then they could call the DPW at 631-957-7520.
"Someone will be there [at the DPW] to answer their calls," Brennan said.
Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane said on Thursday residents could also call the DPW at that number if there are downed trees or tree limbs.
And for duration of the storm Village officials urge residents to be safe.
"Stay inside. Don't go outside," the mayor advised.
"Stay off the roads," Cullinane added. "And residents should also remove their cars from the streets so the plows can move the snow."
