Old Village Hall Relocation Process Begins

Back third of building knocked down as original portion prepares to be moved.

The excavation process for the relocation of the Old Village Hall began in Lindenhurst recently, as the nearly 100 year old building is prepped for a move roughly four streets away.

The former village hall, currently located at 215 South Wellwood Avenue, has been used as a village hall, police station and, most recently, a museum, but the building will take on a new role once again as workers began prepping it for the move last week – historical park building.

The old building's back third was knocked down as workers began to make the building ready for the move to Irmisch Park, between South Third and South Broadway. The knocked-down portion was not originally part of the building, added later in its life for storage space for a growing museum.

The front of the building also had some noticeable changes as it was readied – a front door was taken out and obvious cuts were made near the base.

The removal process was halted recently after tests found asbestos in the building, requiring immediate removal.

The building is expected to be moved within the week to make way for the new Lindenhurst Fire Department Main House building. The current firehouse was recently closed and relocated in preparation of the demolition and construction.

Old Village Hall will live on as a part of a historical park at Irmisch Park, where the village's former railroad station and depot is located, village officials said.

The museum, on the other hand, will stay in the main stretch of Wellwood Avenue, moving to a newer, larger building across the street.
