Village to Landscapers: Take Lawn Waste with You

Village Board to hold public hearing about changing local law to require landscapers to take lawn waste with them instead of leaving it in bags at the curb.

The Lindenhurst Board of Trustees is seeking to update a law pertaining to who work in the Village.

In fact, it set a on at 7:30 p.m. at to discuss a proposed law that would require to take bags filled with lawn waste and leaves generated from the homes they service in the Village with them.

The was set during the same where the ,

Currently, the law allows landscapers to leave bags filled with lawn waste behind at the curb for the Village to pick up and dispose of them.

"We're picking up the bags left by landscapers now, but we're looking to streamline and looking for the landscapers to do this," Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane said.

According to Cullinane, Lindenhurst would be following suit of other municipalities that have already made this change.

"We looked at some other towns, like Islip, and some of the other villages nearby that have done this," he said. "We want to get the private sector involved in keeping the Village clean, and have them be more environmentally responsible."

If the change in the law is passed following the hearing at the next board meeting on January 17, then landscapers wouldn't be able to just leave the bags in front of someone's home anymore.

Landscapers would then have to take them to a disposal facility like the one the Town of has in West Babylon, since the Village does not have one.

Now while many landscapers might leave bags at the curb filled with leaves, grass clippings and other lawn waste from the home they just serviced, there are still others the board believes who might be dumping bags from other homes at one location or another within the Village, leaving the Village spending time and money on their pick-up and removal.

"They could be leaving not only the bags from the property they just serviced, but could also be leaving bags from other houses," Mayor Tom Brennan noted.

Cullinane added: "Wednesday is our day to pick up for lawn waste, and say landscapers come by a home on Thursday, and they leave bags there. They're sitting there, then, for a whole week. This way, if landscapers take the bags with them, then it keeps the streets cleaner and makes the process more efficient."
