Town Salt Marshes to Be Treated for Mosquitoes on Thursday

Parts of several salt marshes in Babylon Town, including those at Cedar, Oak and Gilgo Beaches, will be treated on August 9, say Suffolk health officials.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of the following salt marshes in Town to control mosquito larvae on Thursday, August 9, by helicopter.

They include those at Gilgo, Cedar and Oak Beaches, as well as Captree.

(See also the table below, as well as the accompanying PDF file for a full list of affected marshes in Suffolk County.)

This was announced by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services on late Wednesday afternoon.

Should weather conditions prevent completion of the work, the will be continued the next suitable day, according to SCDHS officials in a release about the treatment.

"Vector Control will be using the larvicide Vectobac 12As (Bti). This larvicide contains naturally occurring bacteria, and is used throughout the mosquito season to treat mosquito-breeding sites," the release read.

"The product is registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and is applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits."

SCDHS officials also said, "No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely, and the products involved have no significant human toxicity."
