Village to Begin Roadwork on Portion of East Gates Ave.

A project that involves fixing the curbing and drainage issues at East Gates and South Wellwood Avenues and repaving a portion of East Gates will get underway shortly, say Village officials.

Work on a portion of East Gates Avenue - which has been in sore need of repairs for some time now - moves closer to fruition.

That's according to Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane, who spoke with Lindenhurst Patch on Wednesday.

"There are a few road projects we'll be doing," he said. " But East Gates is the most immediate concern."

Repairs to Gates Avenue - East and West - have been on the Village's radar for a while now. And the portion, Cullinane said, between South Wellwood Avenue and Smith Street - as he told Patch in March - is the most pressing.

"The curbing around the North and South corners of East Gates and South Wellwood needs to redone, and the basin on that North corner needs to be fixed because there's a drainage and puddling problem there," he said on Wednesday.

Then the road needs to be milled and repaved a minimum of two blocks to South Travis Street, maybe three to Smith Street, he added on Wednesday.

The hold-up has been the years-long wait on already approved federal funding that not only would allow this project to move forward, but would also allow much-needed roadwork to be done on both East and West Gates Avenues, according to Cullinane.

But the Village feels it can no longer wait on that money to at least get the curbing and basin problem fixed on East Gates and repave that small section of the road.

"This is a forward step for us," Cullinane said, noting the Village will look to different resources such as using a portion of the CHIPS funding it's once again receiving from New York State this year.

The smaller East Gates project - as described above - will likely get underway in the next week or so, Cullinane said, as the Village wants to get this completed as soon as possible.
