Lindy Students Say No to Drugs and Yes to Life

Students of Lindenhurst Middle School recently explored the real dangers and personal destruction caused by drug abuse when they heard from police officer and Lindenhurst graduate Mike Zotto (Class of 1984) during a drug awareness program at their school.

Zotto showed students a film depicting images of celebrities and students whose lives were abruptly ended by their drug addictions and explained that all types of people make these bad choices. He then showed a film featuring a young addict from North Babylon before and after her drug arrest.

But the most powerful lesson came from Mike DeMeglio, who told the personal story of the years he spent addicted to drugs and alcohol. He was a typical student with a promising future when he began to experiment with drugs. He presented a stark testimonial about how he spiraled deeper and deeper into addiction.

His message to students was a simple and powerful one: “Don’t go down the same road. It’s not worth it.”

This presentation supports the district’s efforts to make students aware of the dangers of drug use. On May 9, the Lindenhurst School District will initiate a “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” campaign in which the school community will band together and celebrate the benefits of a life without drugs.

In a movement spearheaded by the Peer Leaders group, staff and students will wear matching T-shirts created specifically for the event to illustrate the solidarity shared for the important cause.
