Lindy Teachers, Nurses Revive High School Student Using CPR

Student revived by four Lindy staff members after he collapsed and stopped breathing.

Two teachers and two nurses at Lindenhurst High School were credited with helping to revive a senior student that collapsed at the school last week.

Teachers Richard Rogers and Diane Pollard were honored during the Lindenhurst Board of Education meeting on Wednesday evening at the McKenna Administration Building for their heroism in bringing the student, who was not breathing, back.

Two nurses, Nancy Capriola and Fran Dellasperanzo, were not in attendance during the meeting but were also publicly thanked for their roles in bringing the student back.

"About 12 years ago when the AED use started, it was our current superintendent's idea to bring the CPR and AED staff classes to the district," Rogers told the crowd. "We are thankful we were there for him."

The student, a senior at the high school, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip after being revived and later transfered to Mount Sinai Hospital. He was discharged this week and returned to classes on Wednesday.

Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer and Councilman Tony Martinez were also on hand to thank the teachers.

"We didn't want to miss the opportunity to present our highest award, the heroism award," said Schaffer. "Bob Sweeney added a state citation in recoginition of the act, as well.  The Lindenhurst School District, along with the Town of Babylon, are grateful for your heroism."

Schaffer added: "I’m sure when he goes to walk across the stage for his diploma, there will be a lot of cheers and you're the reason for that."
