The Lindenhurst High School Varsity Cheerleading team has placed nationally for the second consecutive year.
The team headed to Disney World this weekend for the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC), and after two days of competition, the team returns to Lindy placed 12th in the nation.
"Twenty six teams competed on Saturday, and 13 moved on to today's finals. Our team came in 12th," LVC Coach Michele Corcoran told Lindenhurst Patch on Sunday. She coaches the team along with Anne Wishniak.
"After finishing seventh on Saturday night and not getting back to the hotel until 12 a.m. and then having to be ready to go to ESPN [which covered the competition] by 6:45 a.m., I'm very proud to say we moved onto the finals for the second year and ranked nationally," Corcoran said.
The cheerleaders spent Friday when they arrived practicing with All Stars Sports, and even got their picture taken for a cheerleading magazine, said Corcoran.
The next day the team competed just about back to back, performing at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday night and in the 9:04 a.m. finals slot on Sunday morning.
The team was among 50,000 cheerleaders, coaches, parents, judges and fans that descended upon the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida for the Nationals.
There was a wide range of divisions at the two-day competition for co-ed and all-girl teams from schools of varying sizes, However, the LVC team competed in the all-girl, Supervarsity Division I for schools with more than 2,000 students.
The February 9-10 Nationals were streamed live on Varsity.com this past weekend, but were also filmed to be televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to more than 100 million homes and 32 countries "sometime in March and April," said Corcoran.
