Superintendent Richard Nathan Announces Retirement

Nathan has been superintendent since 2009 and a part of Lindenhurst Schools since 1996.

Richard Nathan, the superintendent of the Lindenhurst School District, formally announced his retirement during the Board of Education Business Meeting on Wednesday night at the McKenna Administration Building.

Nathan, who has served as the district's superintendent since July 1, 2009, will leave the position effective June 30, 2014 – the technical end of the 2013-2014 school year.

"My time has been a source of personal pride and the pinnacle of my career," said Nathan, reading from a letter he wrote to the school board. "I will miss the students, the staff and the amazing spirit of the Lindenhurst community."

"Lindenhurst School District will always have a place in my heart," he added.

Nathan has worked in the Lindenhurst School District for the past 18 years, joining the district as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in 1996. He has also served as a deputy superintendent before his current role as the head administrator.

In all, Nathan will have worked 46 years in public education.

"I’m grateful for the Lindenhurst community’s continued support," he said.  "It has been a privilege to work with a committed group of professionals."

Following the reading of his letter at the school board meeting, audience members gave Nathan a round of applause for his work.

"We thank him for his years of service to the Lindenhurst community," said Board of Education President Donna Hochman in a statement. "Over the years, Mr. Nathan continued to increase the levels of academic achievement for all Lindenhurst students."

The search will now begin for the district and the Board of Education to find a new superintendent for the district. Board of Education members said they would conduct a long search for a new district head "who will continue to build a positive momentum towards education success."

Nathan said he would be available to help make the transition to the new superintendent as smooth as possible.

Details on the search will be shared with the community, the district said in a statement.

"The Board is committed to finding a leader who can continue our district’s trend of helping our students succeed at all levels," Hochman said.
