Photos: Lindy Girls Volleyball 'Digs' Deep for Breast Cancer Awareness

Take a look back at the homecoming weekend tournament Lindenhurst Girls Volleyball hosted - and won - in honor of breast cancer awareness.

weekend in Lindenhurst was a flurry of activitiy, from and at the , a and a big homecoming for Lindy football to in the village and a to commemorate a fallen FDNY firefighter.

In the midst of all of the activity, the took the crown in the on while also raising money and awareness for breast cancer.

“This is the sixth year we’ve had a tournament,” Head Coach said. “I took over the program seven years ago, and like other schools wanted to have a tournament. It was originally a season opener – but this year is the first time we held it in October.”

And how did it work out?

"Really well,” she said. “We sold something like in T-shirts and raffle tickets. Attendance was good. The gym was packed early on. I’d like to keep it in October - I like what we did here.”

Indeed, the tourney was turned into the team's annual Dig Pink event benefitting the Side-Out Foundation, and the team not only beat 15 other teams, including Smithtown East in the finals, , but it also raised money and awareness for a good cause.

And it had help from the Lindenhurst JV Girls team, which lent its time and support at the event all day.

Teams from all over Long Island came to play - including , West Islip, Bay Shore, Comsewogue, Hills East, Bayport-Blue Point, Northport, Westhampton, Massapequa, Long Beach, Baldwin, West Hempstead, Saint Anthony's and Kellenberg.

And play they did in both the and gyms, from 8 a.m. until the final point was scored around 5 p.m. at the LHS.

Other sports teams in Lindenhurst have also sponsored "pink" breast cancer awareness events thoughout October, including Lindenhurst Girls Soccer and , which wore pink goggles and sold pink treats for breast cancer awareness at its home meet.

And the also raised money with a week-long bake sale in honor of breast cancer awareness, and participated in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on .
