Lindenhurst Beautification after Sandy Efforts Underway

Three Lindenhurst community organizations come together to begin the effort to help their neighbors and bring back 'beauty after Sandy.'

The Lindenhurst Rotary Club, Lindenhurst Interact and Camp Bulldog have joined forces to help Sandy homeowners get their properties ready for Summer under the project name Lindenhurst Beautification after Sandy.

With the help of volunteers from across Long Island and as far away as New Hampshire, "crews" of volunteers have taken on the job of raking and bagging approximately 180 homes that had registered for the Beautification after Sandy project.

The first cleanup was done by a group of volunteers from a new New York-based company called Vivint Solar.

The Vivint Solar volunteers were Mike Flanagan, Mike Brand, Pat Jensen, Chase Taylor, Kent Shumway, Brandon Seidel, Auriel Reeves, Adam Struetz and Eli Johnson.

"These wonderful people spent three hours recently cleaning up a property on Orchard Street," said Lindy Rotary President Jackie Milton, who was also joined that day by Rotary Vice President Phil Renna and Corinna Reyes from Camp Bulldog.

This was just the first of seven weekends that volunteers will be giving of their time and energy to help Sandy homeowners with their recovery.

"Each home we visit will be given a new rake, a planter filled with begonias, soil information and a surprise gift," Milton said.

All of these items have been received through donations from various organizations and community residents, she noted.

The weekend cleanups have been continuing since then, and a huge cleanup effort is happening the weekend of April 13 and 14, with 35 people coming from New Hampshire Rotary, plus other groups. That weekend's big effort all begins at 10 a.m. at Camp Bulldog at Shore Road Park.
