Cops: Man Robbed Drug Store Before Being Hit on Sunrise Highway

Update (8:10 p.m.): Suffolk County Police said a 27-year-old Central Islip man was hit by an SUV after fleeing from the nearby Rite Aid store, where he was caught stealing hair products and other items.

After fleeing the store, he attempted to cross Sunrise Highway when he was hit by an SUV at around 4 p.m.

The man, identified as Douglas Redmond, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip for a fractured leg and other non-life-threatening injuries.

The SUV, driven by a 60-year-old West Babylon woman, was damaged in the crash. The driver and her three-year-old granddaughter sustained minor injuries.

Redmond was charged with petty larceny and will be arraigned at First District Court at a later date.

The accident had snared traffic on Sunrise earlier on Wednesday, closing all westbound lanes at the sites. By 6 p.m., lanes had reopened.

Original Story: A car accident has shut down traffic going westbound on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst this afternoon.

Suffolk County Police and North Lindenhurst Fire Department are on the scene of a car accident in front the Applebee's on Sunrise Highway.

Eyewitnesses at the scene told Patch a person crossing the highway was struck by an SUV. Police on the scene did not confirm this.

There was no immediate word on any injuries sustained in the accident.

Westbound traffic on Sunrise Highway is being diverted to North Delaware Avenue.

Traffic on nearby streets such as Wellwood Avenue is also backed up due to the detours.
