Crime Rate Remains Low Over Past Month Throughout Town

The Suffolk County Police Department's First Precinct continued its trend of falling crime numbers in recent months in November, according to precinct officials.

Inspector Gerard Gigante, the commanding officer for the precinct which covers most of the Town of Babylon, said burglaries throughout the district continued to stay down at around 18 percent lower than the same time in 2012.

Gigante estimated the rate of burglaries in the area could be up to 35 percent lower than two years ago.

Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst faced a low month of crimes in the area with the village totaling one stolen car and the northern area recorded two. Robberies were also low in the areas with Lindenhurst recording none in November while North Lindenhurst only had one.

The village, however, did see a spike in residential burglaries month-over-month to five in November, up from only two in October. North Lindenhurst only saw one residential burglary in the same month while the entire precinct saw 38 total.

Motor vehicle accidents jumped up during November, with the town seeing 626 total – nearly 100 more than October. Less than 18 percent of those crashes resulted in an injury.

The police precinct holds a Community Meeting open to the public every month at the West Babylon Public Library, allowing residents to voice concerns to officers at that time. The next meeting will take place January 2 at 7 p.m.
