Update: Man Killed in Sunrise Highway Crash in N. Lindy

The driver in a serious one-car crash that shut down a portion of Sunrise between North Delaware and North Greene Avenues early Friday morning has died, according to a published report.

Update, 9:25 a.m.: Suffolk Police said that portion of Sunrise Highway is now open.

Original Story
A man was killed early Friday morning when the car he was driving struck a guard rail on Eastbound Sunrise Highway in North Lindenhurst, flipping the vehicle several times and ejecting him, according to a published report.

According to a report on Newsday.com, Suffolk Police said the single-vehicle accident that involved a white Suzuki wagon happened at North Fulton Avenue at about 3:30 a.m.

Eyewitness Virginia Ginger Bosak-Quail gave this account: "It was a horrible accident. I was there last night right as the police got there. The saddest part of the story was that the worker from the 7-Eleven who called 9-1-1 was put on a hold type of call: 'Your call is important to us. It will be answered in the order it was received.'

"She called four times before she could get anyone on the line. Who else calls 9-1-1 at 3:30 in the morning? With that said there was nothing they could have done for the driver, even if they got there minutes before."

Another eyewitness, John Legutko, said on Lindenhurst Patch's Facebook page, "I was there at 5 a.m. this morning. Apparently he was traveling at a very high speed, he hit the guard rail before rolling over, and was ejected. There were car parts scattered all over Sunrise."

Police said in the report Sunrise was closed going East between North Delaware and North Greene Avenues for investigation by Crime Scene Unit detectives.

It's unclear how long the road will remain shut down, according to the report.

The identity of the driver - who was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip - hasn't been released, pending notification of next of kin, the report said.

Police said in the report the May 10 crash remains under investigation.

Editor's Note: Regarding the 911 call Charlie Sesto, a member of the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, had this to say: "While it's a shame about the 911 call, remember that serves all of Suffolk County. Town of Babylon residents should call 631-226-1212 for all fire and rescue emergencies. That may have shaved up to five minutes off the response time...please forward that to get that vital message out...it may not sound like a lot of time, but it can save a life when minutes count...."
