Eight School Board Candidates, Minus One Incumbent, Make It Official

The field of eight - which doesn't include incumbent Ray Doran - is running for four seats on the Lindenhurst Board of Education. The eight running does include three incumbents and five new candidates.

Eight candidates are running for four seats on the Lindenhurst Board of Education, according to the Lindy School District.

Officials told Lindenhurst Patch late Monday the eight individuals who are running - three incumbents and five new candidates - doesn't include Trustee Ray Doran, who’s up for reelection this year.

There was no word on Monday night as to why, other than Doran deciding not to run for reelection became official.

The candidates who residents will be able choose this year on Tuesday, May 21, during the Annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election include:

  • Linda Eisen.
  • Robert Voyles.
  • Lynn Aniello.
  • Ed Langone.
  • Norma Sarmiento.
  • Richard Koehler.
  • Sean McNeilly.
  • Robert Vitiello.
Langone, Vitiello and Koehler are all current trustees on the BOE, which is the official policy-making body of the District consisting of nine residents elected by the community to serve overlapping, unpaid terms of three years.

Langone and Vitiello are long-time BOE members. Newcomer Sarmiento is running against Langone, while Vitiello is running unopposed.

Koehler was appointed to the Board in December following former BOE Trustee Julie Bartolomeo’s resignation in October after an allegation by a parent at the October 3 business meeting.

After an investigation by Suffolk Police, her husband, James, was arrested and charged for providing alcoholic beverages to a group of Lindenhurst High School students at his home in Lindy in September.

Since Koehler wasn’t elected, but instead appointed to serve out Bartolomeo’s term - which will end in May 2014 - he must run again this May. Opposing him is newcomer McNeilly.

Running for Doran’s spot are three new candidates: Eisen, Voyles and Aniello.

Of the three Aniello was also interviewed for the spot that Bartolomeo left vacant and was filled by the BOE’s appointment of Koehler.

All eight candidates got their petitions in by the April 22, late afternoon deadline, according to District officials.

The candidates are scheduled to attend the annual Meet the Candidate Night at William Rall Elementary School on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. It’s part of the Lindenhurst Council of PTAs’ monthly meeting that night.

The same night Superintendent Richard Nathan presents the 2013-14 school budget the BOE finalized on April 17 and is scheduled to approve on April 25.

The finalized budget includes a 1.99 percent tax levy, plus the removal of 66 aides and the use of $1.1 million in reserves.
